Plucky WHS U14s narrowly lose out to island rivals

Wick High School’s U14 football team suffered a narrow home defeat to Kirkwall Grammar School today. The boys’ coach Mr Macintosh describes the match from his position in the technical area…

It was an uncharacteristically sunny day as Wick High School Under 14’s took on Kirkwall Grammar in a friendly match. The game got off to a great start with both teams giving their all in the blazing sunshine. Kirkwall, however, dealt better with the searing heat and took their chances well. This, combined with an inspired display by their goalkeeper to deny Ben Sinclair from six yards, resulted in a 3-0 score line for Kirkwall at half-time.

Wick showed their resilience and snatched a quick goal at the beginning of the second half with Ben Sinclair converting from a cut back by Robbie McIvor. Their dominance was thwarted by a breakaway goal against the run of play by Kirkwall to make the score 4-1. However, the Wick players did not allow their heads to go down; rather they rallied and, with a clinical finish by Kieron Davies and a rasping free kick from 20 yards by Greg Mackay, brought the score back to 4-3. Despite continuing pressure, Kirkwall Grammar did well to quash the Wick advances and held on to their one goal lead. All-in-all both teams left the pitch happy with their performance in what was a great match for the neutral supporter.
